Big crowd! Today's show was filled with audience laughter, and to be honest, I wasn't sure they were trying to be that funny, but they were! Funny and touching and interesting and experimental. Really good local work!
If valley fog was a metaphor for this show it succeeded in losing me. I found it absolutely dreadful. Amateurish, pretentious and embarrasing! The gliding office chairs were amusing for perhaps 5 minutes, but to carry an hour show! Pleeeease!!! Just because no one understands you doesn't make you an artist. A colossal bore!
I agree with the previous anonymous. This show is pretentious and bizarre. Not in a good way. I've heard several people say they liked it, however I must wonder if they were too insecure to admit they didn't "get it." Two years of this show at the Rogue is at least (and I'm being kind here) one too many.
Bizarre to be sure... but I think that's one of the things we liked about it.
If you're looking for a narrative... you might be better off seeing something else.
Did I "get it"?
Who knows?
I got my $7 worth if that's what I'm supposed to get. I'm glad I went.
Can't say I learned anything about the 99 as a historical route or as a metaphor for anything else... that being said, I did enjoy this show as multimedia storytelling (especially the section about the pick-a-part yard).
The office chair choreography is interesting for a while (and yes, probably there's too much of it), but it's really the soundscape and shadows that really caught my attention. As an audience member, I don't expect performance art to deliver the same thing I expect from theatre (i.e. a coherent narrative)-- I expect arresting images, with depth to them. Baba for Now provides those in droves.
Clocked in at only 40 minutes the night I saw it.
I actually rather enjoy the "bizarre" aspects of this show. In my opinion it played better 2 years ago when it was staged in a bar. There was a certain "energy" that was absent this time around. Perhaps the missing element is the juxtaposition between the piece and the space. Still, a worthy efort.
Oh my gosh, I laughed my ass off. It was truely entertaining. There was really nothing to"get" about it. It was just entertainment on a multi sensory level. I enjoyed it and thought it was the best show I have seen so far. "Middle aged women rolling around in tutus on office chairs is hystarical to me. People take things too serious and look for too many "hidden, deep meanings to life". Stop, sit back, relax and laugh. It is only for your enjoyment.
Thanks BABA
I guess the first reviewers haven't lived here long. I thought it was a great performance,,,,,,and reflective of the 99 as its runs through our lives. Then again, I drive it 5 days a week so I'm obviously biased. Anything that incorporates the Last True 99 Icon (The Mammoth Orange Drive-in just outside of Chowchilla) has vision...and the idiots that couldn't see the automobile metaphor vis-a-vis the use of office chairs should stick with viewing action movies or American Idol.
Sorry- hate action movies and American Idol. Still think this show is crappy. Nothing personal. Nice to see such devoted fans, though. The name calling of those who disagree shows such a high level of intelligence. Really.
"Just because no one understands you doesn't make you an artist."
The next time you post a review, please speak for youself and say "I" instead of "no one".
Lost and Found on The 99 started in a darkened studio with the ladies walking into the audience and offering cheese sandwiches. (I did not partake so cannot offer a review of them)
Recorded voice-overs and music were synchronized with flickering projected images of Highway 99 and other sights while BABA walked, spoke, danced, and glided on stage.
The vignettes were at turns unsettling, provocative, silly, and humorous. The subtitle - "Multi-Media Dance Theater with Fruit" sums it up.
I enjoyed the show.
